Today is our fourth installment of our new Thursday TIMEOUT series. We're happy to give you a little info and hot photos of handsome sporty hunks who've caught our attention and fueled our fantasies. This week, Mexican-American sexy soccer star, Carlos Bocanegra. The world of soccer/fútbol is not one that many of us know too much about, but you'll fall in love with Carlos, just like we did. Today at Bacchus enjoy all tequila for $5 and a fresh new batch or Baker + Butcher sandwiches for $4. Enjoy!
This cutie with the crooked smile is 37 year old international soccer star Carlos Bocanegra. He was born and raised in Upland, California, a sleepy suburb of Los Angeles.
Yet despite a climate more suited to beach pursuits, and a passion for baseball, football, basketball and hockey, Carlos remembers getting into soccer from an early age. When he was 5 he played Peewee Soccer with his older brother and he liked it.
Without a local or national professional soccer league, there were no heroes for Carlos to admire and he pursued baseball, football and track. But something about soccer called him back.
Because of his prowess and natural abilities in soccer, when he was sophomore in high school, universities/colleges started writing him letters and expressing an interest in him attending their school. By the time he was a senior, several schools invited him for a recruiting visit. The schools paid all his expenses and he would stay on campus.
They take you around, you go to a game usually to get a taste of the atmosphere, and all the students are there; they want to show you that there's lot of sex to be had at the school as well! That's kind of how it goes.
He was offered scholarships to play football at several universities, but ultimately accepted a full scholarship to UCLA to play soccer. While at UCLA, he studied history and geography.
At UCLA he fueled may sexual fantasies (and perhaps he fulfilled several). In 2000, he was drafted by the US Major League Soccer (MLS) Chicago Fire as the 4th pick in the first round.
He proceeded to win the MLS Rookie of the Year Award and his team made it to the MLS Championship match and won it (the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup). He became one of the top defenders in MLS, becoming the first player to win the MLS Defender of the Year Award twice, in 2002 and 2003. Carlos scored five goals and had eight assists in his four years in MLS.
His star was on the rise! The Premier League in the UK took notice and signed him on in 2004. It was rare for an American to be playing in England and his play was so good it earned him the nicknames The Jackal and The Black Snake. He was a team leader in goals scored.
After a few seasons in England, over the next ten years, he played for a few teams in France, a team in Scotland, another in Spain then back to the the MLS Toronto team in 2014. He retired at the end of the 2014 season.
All during this time, he did get to play on the US National men's team for World Cup and other invitational matches. He was even selected as captain of the US team.
And, as the subject of many fantasies, Carlos was one of the subjects of ESPN's body issue in 2012. He's quoted as saying that "Soccer players run alot, so they don't keep much body fat. And they hear from admirers that their legs are sexy." Here are some shots from that shoot.
