Today is Prince Kuhio Day - a state holiday. We celebrate a man who chose the well-being of the community (his neighbors and his family) over his ego.
He's a great example of keeping calm in times of disruption, conflict and regime change. As next in line to the throne when the Americans overthrew the Hawaiian government. He considered the plight of the common folk over his own position in power in island politics. Instead of inciting a bloody civil war, he chose compromise in order to best represent the interests of native Hawaiians. In doing so, he helped usher in a bloodless regime change. Prince Kuhio wound up serving 10 terms in congress representing the Territtory of Hawaii.
