Should Win/Will Win

Tonight is Hollywood’s biggest night of year—the 89th annual Academy Awards. We're showing the Oscars with sound at 7:30. Come on by.

Who do you think will win? But a more interesting question (like when your bartender mixes your favorite cocktail - see below for Oscar cocktail recipes):

Do they always get it right?

No. It seems as though some get awards because of sentimentality, or worse, politics.

It's bizarre to think about some of the past winners as outstanding performances. Helen Hunt won an Oscar for As Good As It Gets for playing herself. She won because she was the only American in the line up surrounded by 4 British actresses who all gave better performances.

Some Oscar winners are often the recipients of what we'll call sympathy sex: the type of sex you have when you pity someone, either because he/she suffered a personal loss or because of his/her puppy eyes. These awards go to the aged or sickly. Think: Helen Hayes for Supporting Actress Oscar for Airport (1970).

Sometimes a movie will win Best Picture because it has the biggest cast and crew (and they all get to vote on this one category). The most UNDESERVING best pictures of the past 30 years (with their beefcake photos):

Best Picture 1995: Braveheart
Better Nominees: Sense and Sensibility; Babe; Il Postino; Apollo 13

Best Picture 2000: Gladiator
Better Nominees: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Traffic; Erin Brockovich; Chocolate

Best Picture 2005: Crash
Better Nominees: Capote; Brokeback Mountain; Good Night, and Good Luck; Munich
